✈️ How to Get to Bocas del Toro, Panama (2025 Guide)

🛫 Option 1:

Fly from Panama City to Bocas del Toro

✅ Easiest and fastest option

  • Airline: Air Panama
  • Departure: Albrook Airport (PAC), not Tocumen (PTY)
  • Arrival: Bocas del Toro Airport (BOC) on Isla Colón
  • Flight time: ~1 hour

Pro tips:

  • Book early — flights can fill up, especially on weekends
  • Baggage allowance is limited (check carry-on + checked bag rules)
  • Taxi from Bocas airport to town is just a few minutes (or walk)

🚌 Option 2:

Overnight Bus + Water Taxi from Panama City

💰 Budget-friendly, but longer

  • Bus: Depart from Albrook Bus Terminal to Almirante (10–11 hours)
  • Water Taxi: From Almirante to Bocas Town (~30 mins)

Companies:

  • Buses: Tranceibosa, Terminales David
  • Water taxis: Bocas Marine Tours, Taxi 25

Pro tips:

  • Buses leave in the evening (~6–8pm), arrive early morning
  • Bring warm clothes — buses are cold
  • Water taxis start ~6:00 AM, run every 30 mins

🚌 Option 3:

Shuttle from Costa Rica (Puerto Viejo / San José)

If you’re already in Costa Rica, there are daily shuttles to Bocas via the Sixaola border crossing.

Route:

  1. Shuttle or bus from Puerto Viejo or San José to Sixaola
  2. Walk across the border into Panama (Sixaola to Guabito)
  3. Minibus to Almirante
  4. Water taxi to Bocas Town

Shuttle companies:

  • Caribe Shuttle
  • Hello Panama
  • Jungle Bus

Pro tips:

  • Border requires valid passport + exit proof (sometimes onward flight)
  • Bring small USD bills for border fees and snacks

🚗 DIY Drive Option (Panama side only)

  • You can drive to Almirante, park at a secure lot near the water taxi docks
  • Water taxi takes ~30 minutes to Isla Colón

Pro tips:

  • Use a secure parking lot — rates around $5/day
  • Roads can be rainy/slippery — 4×4 is helpful but not mandatory
